My 5 or 6 week old kitten has been eating the litter and now has loose stools...?

A lady dropped this little kitten off at our house claiming that she was at least 8 weeks old... the kitten fits in the palms of my hands. Just recently she started having loose stools and whenever we rush her to the litter pan she starts eating the litter. Could the loose stools be related to her eating the litter?

Most definitely but the reason why she is doing this is because 1- she had a change in diet, 2-she is hungry 3- she has parasites or 4- she has a vitamin deficiency. Keep dry food always available for her and buy a tube of multivitamins in the pet store as well as a de-wormier. The stool will change its consistency as soon as she gets betterGood Luck
Reply:absolutely!!!

It can go both ways too..could cause constipation or diarrhea.

maybe try a different brand of litter? something that isn't really fine because if it gets stuck in their paws they'll also ingest it.

I know where there is something called "yesterday's news" it's made out of recycled paper, and is much bigger.. so she may not be bothered with it. maybe try cleaning it out really really well.. perhaps a scent in there that she's smelling?

You could also try putting some scented litter powder in there.. may turn her off with the smell.

good luck!!
Reply:Litter isnt good for her to eat. But its probably worms. Most all babies have them and need Vet worming medicine ( Not the stuff over the counter). Are you feeding her kitten food? And no cows milk. Milk replacement for kittens is whats needed.
Reply:Try feeding her small meals of minced cooked chicken which will help with the loose stools and switch her litter to one of the natural kaolin/clay based ones, which if she still eats it will help stop the diarrhea rather than aggravating it. She will also need worming, but I would wait until her stools are firmer as the worming meds can have a scouring effect on their own
